HTC Desire delayed by ash cloud

Thursday April 22, 2010

Deliveries of the HTC Desire smartphone have been delayed due to the ash cloud. The latest Android phone was meant to go on sale yesterday. The handset was already on sale through 3's upgrade service and via the network's website, and many customers who have already ordered the Desire are still waiting to receive it.

Deliveries have been scuppered due to the problems created by the eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland, which has been spewing clouds of ash since last week and grounding flights.

"Our original plan was that further deliveries were due this week," said Sylvia Chind, head of branded handsets at 3. "But as a result of the ash cloud... the deliveries that we were expecting from HTC's manufacturers in Asia have not arrived. They are unlikely to until the chaos subsides."

"Until further notice our upgrades team and three.co.uk are very stock constrained. We do have a few left from our original batch, and these will be shared amongst 50 of our stores. If you have pre-bought the Desire over the phone or online we’ll be able to fulfil our delivery commitment to you."

She added those who had already pre-ordered the HTC Desire should contact 3 for a delivery date.
